"Blue buggy pine" (also known as beetle-kill pine or blue-stained pine) is a type of pine lumber characterized by distinctive blue-gray streaks and small "bug holes" caused by a natural symbiotic relationship between mountain pine beetles and a specific type of fungus. This unique appearance is highly sought after for its rustic, natural aesthetic in interior design and woodworking.
* Properties and Use
Structural Integrity: The fungus causes only discoloration and does not affect the structural strength or integrity of the wood. Once the wood is kiln-dried, any remaining insects or fungus are killed, making the wood safe for use.
